St. Stephen Lutheran School

Since 1864

Over 133 Years of Grace

God's blessings to our school began in 1864 when our congregation established a Christian Day School under the leadership of Rev. Moldakowski. The school was held in the church. That building stood where our present chancel stands today. In 1892 the school outgrew the building and the Methodist Church, at 604 E. Maple St., was purchased for school use. The school remained there until 1913 when a new brick school was built on the same site.

This building cost $9,596 and is now used as a home and business.

St. Stephen Congregation dedicated a new building at the present N. Palmatory site in 1956. This building included 5 classrooms, office, and basement kitchen. In 1966 an additional 3 classrooms, new kitchen and gym were added.

Taking a bold step in 1988, church/school offices, meeting rooms, and a preschool room were added to the existing school as Phase I of a major building project.

Since our modest start in 1864, classes and programs have been added. In 1974 the kindergarten program was added to the school. The preschool program, called Kiddie Kollege, for 3-year-olds and 4-year-olds was started in 1982.

Blessings from God have resulted in continual growth in programs, staff, and enrollment. Presently, in 1997, a dedicated faculty of 9 full time teachers, 1 half-time teacher, 2 pastors, 1 paid teacher aide serve an enrollment of 31 Kiddie Kollege students and 122 students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

It is only by God's continual grace that we have been blessed.

To God be the glory!
